Do you know the difference between the two and what it means for how you care for you skin?</p><p><br /></p><span><a name='more'></a></span><p>When your skin feels tight and parched after cleansing it's hard to know whether you have dry or dehydrated skin. But it's important to differentiate because it affects how you treat your skin. So let's first talk about the difference between the two, and how to determine your skin type.</p><p><span style="color: #6aa84f; font-family: helvetica;"><b>Defining <i>dry</i> and <i>dehydrated</i></b></span></p><p>Put simply, dry skin occurs when your skin doesn't produce enough oil and lipids. On the other hand, dehydrated skin occurs when there isn't enough water in your dermis.</p><p><span style="color: #6aa84f; font-family: helvetica;"><b>Diagnosing your skin concerns</b></span></p><p>There is no one perfect method to understand your skin type. It can change in different environments, as you age, and with your hormones. But one method that has helped me is answering the following questions:</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Do you use facial oils but your skin still feels tight?</li><li>Do you use moisturizer without humectants (glycerin, sodium hyaluronate etc.), but your skin still feels parched?</li><li>Have you ever traveled to a super humid climate (e.g. Hawaii, Florida) and your skin finally felt soft and supple?</li></ul><div>If any of these scenarios describe your skin, you likely have dehydrated skin. If none of these scenarios describe your skin, but it still feels like a desert sometimes, you likely have dry skin.</div><div><br /></div><div><span style="color: #6aa84f; font-family: helvetica;"><b>Treating your skin</b></span></div><div><br /></div><div>Dry skin underproduces oil. So the best way to add it back is with nourishing facial oils. Find your favorite varietal and incorporate it into your routine. Moisturizers that contain delicious plant oils and butters are another way to nourish dry skin. Some of the ingredients to look for includes borage seed oil, marula oil, rosehip seed oil, shea butter, coco butter and my favorite: <a href="http://www.frecklestotoes.com/2014/08/barbary-fig-seed-oil.html">Barbary fig seed oil</a>. </div><div><br /></div><div>Dehydrated skin is missing enough water. Unfortunately, simply adding water to your face won't fix the problem due to transepidermal water loss (TEWL). As a result of TEWL that water will simply evaporate off the surface of your skin. To lock water in place you need a humectant. A humectant is a molecule that is water loving. So it pulls water in and hugs it into place. Some examples of humectants you can look for in a serum or moisturizer are: <a href="http://www.frecklestotoes.com/2020/07/i-discovered-moisturizing-mineral.html">sodium hyaluronate</a>, glycerin, panthenol, honey and Senna seed extract.</div><div><br /></div><div><b><span style="color: #6aa84f; font-family: helvetica;">Can you have both dry and dehydrated skin? </span></b></div><div><br /></div><div>Yes! This is definitely possible. And the way you address it is to use both oils <i>and</i> humectants in your routine. Layering is your friend.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">___________ _ ___________</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; text-transform: lowercase;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">Image courtesy of:</span></div><div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">1. <a href="https://digital-photography-school.com/create-colorful-artistic-images-using-oil-water/">Digital Photography School</a></span></div><div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;"><span face=""></span><br /></span></div><div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;"><span face=""></span><span face=""></span><span face="">I sought out this information <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 18px;">and was not compensated monetarily or otherwise for this post.</span></span></span></div></div></div><p></p>Charlottehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07694299249778577305noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4412111551984078727.post-6694925648827407862020-08-06T11:44:00.002-07:002020-08-06T11:46:28.347-07:00A foundation for dry skin<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oPSaXFebj28/XyxMh2m4AHI/AAAAAAAAB2c/Utz0MtT6LaoQir1XJYBZoYy5u-Dw3zTJACLcBGAsYHQ/s900/WORK-IT-OUT.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="900" height="513" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oPSaXFebj28/XyxMh2m4AHI/AAAAAAAAB2c/Utz0MtT6LaoQir1XJYBZoYy5u-Dw3zTJACLcBGAsYHQ/w513-h513/WORK-IT-OUT.png" width="513" /></a></div><div>I have the fantastic skin type that is both dry and acne prone. Sounds like a contradiction, but I digress. This means that most foundations I've tried have broken me out or turned dry and cakey on me.</div><div><br /></div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div>Even foundations that celebrity makeup artists endorse, or ones that have thousands of five star reviews seem to turn into flakes on my skin. So I rarely wore it. But then I came across <a href="https://hautcosmetics.ca">Haut Cosmetics</a>. They are a Canadian company that handcrafts each product from locally grown and ethically sourced ingredients. Their product line includes masks, mists, serums, bronzers, eyeshadows, mascaras, you name it! They even do <a href="https://hautcosmetics.ca/consultation/">consultations</a> and <a href="https://hautcosmetics.ca/product-category/custom-makeup-looks/">custom formulations</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div>After getting a consultation, they recommended a moisture drenching foundation called <a href="https://hautcosmetics.ca/product/dewy-hdd-cream/">Dewy HDD Cream</a> in the color vanilla for me. The foundation is made from coco butter, tamanu oil, borage seed oil and camu camu fruit. You all know how much I like <a href="http://www.frecklestotoes.com/2013/07/when-charcoal-doesnt-work.html">tamanu oil</a>. It is the ultimate skin soother: it can calm bug bites, wounds, and most importantly in this case: acne. Borage oil is high in linoleic acid, which can calm inflammation [1]. And camu camu fruit is exceptionally high in vitamin C [2]. I love it when my makeup is also nourishment. </div><div><br /></div><div>Given these ingredients, it's no wonder this foundation didn't smother my skin. The finish was impeccable and dewy. It didn't look dry or settle into pores. And best of all, zero breakouts.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span face="" style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">___________ _ ___________</span></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">References</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;"><a href="https://www.mdpi.com/1422-0067/19/1/70/htm">[1]</a> Lin, TK et al, Anti-imflammatory and Skin Bsrrier Repair Effects of topical Application of Some Plant Oils, Int J Mol Sci 19(1), 2018 </span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;"><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5489195/">[2]</a> Smid, J. et al, Morphological and Genetic Diversity of Camu Camu in the Peruvian Amazon, PLoS One v12(6) 2017 </span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">Ingredients:</span></div><div><span style="background-color: white; text-transform: lowercase;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">organic cocoa butter, organic jojoba seed oil, organic peppermint oil, organic olive fruit oil, organic arnica flower extract, vitamin e, sunflower seed oil, organic tamanu oil, organic borage seed oil, organic camu camu fruit, organic sulphur, organic arrowroot, zinc oxide, iron oxides, radish root ferment filtrate.</span></span></div><div><span style="background-color: white; text-transform: lowercase;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;"><br /></span></span></div><div><div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">Image courtesy of:</span></div><div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">1. Marring your hair with an indentation? That’s not an accident. It’s actually due to the molecular structure of your hair.<o:p></o:p></font></p><span><a name='more'></a></span><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><font face="georgia">Let’s start at the beginning: the basic building blocks of hair. Your hair is composed of keratin, which is a fibrous protein. There are three kinds of bonds that hold together the proteins in your hair: disulfide bonds, salt bonds and hydrogen bonds. Disulfide bonds and salt bonds are the stronger, more permanent bonds in your hair. Hydrogen bonds, however, are weaker. Hydrogen bonds can be broken two ways: with 1) water and 2) heat.<o:p></o:p></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><font face="georgia"> </font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><font face="georgia">So when your hair gets wet, the hydrogen bonds are broken, and that means your hair can be reshaped. When it dries, it can take on a new form. This is the secret behind rag curls and ponytail dents. So if you hop in the ocean, emerge and put your hair in a braid and then take it down hours later, the waves are preserved by the new bond structure of your hair. And the only way to get rid of it is to break and reform the hydrogen bonds into a new shape. <o:p></o:p></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><font face="georgia"> </font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><font face="georgia">And now I’m going to blow your mind: this is also the reason why humidity can change your hairstyle. Humidity is essentially water suspended in the air, and that water can be absorbed into the hair shaft, altering your style (and sometimes introducing frizz).<o:p></o:p></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><font face="georgia"> </font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><font face="georgia">I mentioned that heat can also break hydrogen bonds. This is why getting a blow-out straightens hair. The heat of the blow dryer combined with a round brush reshapes the hair to match the curve of the brush. The same result can be obtained by the high heat from curling irons and straighteners.<o:p></o:p></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><font face="georgia"> </font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><font face="georgia">Maybe it’s just me, but it feels a little crazy that the next time I hop in the shower I’ll know I’m breaking bonds in my hair.</font><font size="5" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><font face="georgia"><br /></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><font face="georgia"><br /></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: center;"><font face="georgia"><br /></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">___________ _ ___________</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><font face="georgia"><br /></font></p><div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;"><span><font face="arial">Image courtesy of:</font></span></div><div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;"><span><font face="arial">1. <a href="http://lionesseflatiron.com/1940s-hair-tools/" target="_blank">Lionness Flat Iron</a></font></span></div><div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;"><span><font face="arial"><span></span><br /></font></span></div><div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;"><span><font face="arial"><span></span><span></span><span>I sought out this information <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">and was not compensated monetarily or otherwise for this post.</span></span></font></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></span></div>Charlottehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07694299249778577305noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4412111551984078727.post-87337440370925139372020-07-23T11:03:00.000-07:002020-07-23T14:27:52.024-07:00I discovered a moisturizing mineral sunscreen<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Most sunscreens failed on points #4, #5 and #6. You wouldn’t believe how many times my face looked like a greaseball. The things I do in the name of research.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-size: medium;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-size: medium;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Because of these steep qualifications only one made the cut: <a href="https://juicebeauty.com/products/stem-cellular-cc-cream">Juice beauty CC cream</a>. It has 20% zinc oxide for maximum UV coverage, and it’s slightly tinted so there’s no risk of a white cast. For reference, I used the color Natural Glow. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-size: medium;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-size: medium;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">But I believe the key ingredient that keeps me dewy is sodium hyaluronate. Sodium hyaluronate is a linear polysaccharide that is ubiquitous in the human body and crucial to cellular functions [1]. Sodium hyaluronate in the skin has a superpower: it is able to absorb up to 1000x its weight in water [2]. So, if you have dehydrated skin, it will help hold water in your skin and keep it soft and moisturized. Our epidermal and dermal cells are able to synthesize sodium hyaluronate throughout our lives, but they lose their ability to produce <i>optimal</i> amounts as we age [2]. So, if you’ve noticed your skin feels a little drier than it did when you were younger, this could be why. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I don't love that they use ethylhexylglycerin as a preservative because it's classified as a mild skin and eye irritant. I haven't noticed a problem after months of using it. But as always, if it irritates your skin, stay away. It's not the worst ingredient in the world, but in the spirit of transparency, I wanted to disclose the good with the bad.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-size: medium;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-size: medium;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I like to apply this sunscreen over my facial oil and top it off with a hydrosol. Sodium hyaluronate can absorb “up to” 1000x its weight in water, so you want to give it lots of water to maximize that absorption potential. Give it a try and let me know what you think!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">There's no magic pill for acne. So they they say, at least.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"></span></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Sometimes acne is caused by food sensitivities like <a href="http://www.frecklestotoes.com/2013/01/acne-now-linked-to-diet.html">dairy</a>. In
other cases, acne can be caused by nutritional deficiencies.</span></span> I recently found out that people with
higher requirements of vitamin B5 can experience
painful acne. Supplementing with vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic
acid, can cause significant improvement. </span></span><br />
<div>
<b><span style="color: #38761d;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span></span></b></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><b><span style="color: #38761d;">My experience</span></b></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Pantothenic
acid breaks up sebum that can harden and clog pores. On one hand this
can make skin drier. But on the other, it can make skin a lot smoother.
This was my experience, and a mere 500mg a day is enough to make a
difference for me. But depending on the severity of your breakouts, you
can customize your dosage. In fact, you can go up to 5-10grams and
continue to see improvements according to a <a href="http://orthomolecular.org/library/jom/1997/pdf/1997-v12n02-p099.pdf">study</a>. </span></span></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span></b></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><b><span style="color: #38761d;">How it works</span></b></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Vitamin B5 works by reducing the production of oil by the sebaceous glands. This is u<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">nlike the very dangerous Accutane, which shrinks the sebaceous glands. Pantothenic acid increases Coenzyme A, which amps up the metabolic
breakdown of oils. The more
Coenzyme A, the more fatty acids can be metabolized, which means they
are oxidized or burned up as energy production.</span></span></span></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: #38761d;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br /></span></span></span></span></b></div>
<b><span style="color: #38761d;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Where to find it</span></span></span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Pantothenic acid is in some foods, but the best way to get 1000mg or more is through supplements. Grab it from the vitamin section of your local Whole Foods or online at <a href="http://www.iherb.com/Vitamin-B5-Pantothenic-Acid">iHerb</a>. Try it out, starting at a low dose of 500mg and increasing until you see the difference you want. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I've been on a shampoo and conditioner hunt since <a href="http://www.frecklestotoes.com/2013/12/my-shampoo-stopped-working.html">this happened</a>. Pretty sure I've tried at least 100 combinations, including John Masters, Jasons, Aubrey, Avalon Organics, Briogeo, Ahnesti, Hugos, Nature's Gate, Wonder Seed, Alaffia, Shea Moisture, Shikai and more.</span></span><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">My hair seems to display symptoms of build up. A shampoo/conditioner will work for one shower, maybe a dozen, and then fall limp and dull. When I switch and move back, it'll work again. But for a shorter period. Doing some research indicates panthenol, the famous B5 vitamin for improving hair health, can cause build up. And there are very few conditioners without it. Also, waxes and certain emulsifiers are prone to build up. Until I can unearth a brand without these (and sulfates and harsh preservatives), I've found a good alternative.</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><a href="http://www.rahua.com/us/hair.html">Rahua</a> gives me the highest ratio of good hair days. I still need to switch it up often. But they do the best at volume, frizz reduction, shine enhancement and wave contouring. Their formula isn't particularly revolutionary. Typical conditioner is made of water, oils, butters, humectants, emulsifiers and sometimes occlusives. And so is theirs. But perhaps it is the ratio that's key. Panthenol, notably, is at the bottom of the list.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The price isn't ideal, I won't lie. But you can often find it on sale at <a href="http://www.dermstore.com/product_Voluminous+Shampoo_36970.htm">Dermstore</a>, <a href="http://www.thedetoxmarket.com/collections/shampoo/products/voluminous-shampoo">The Detox Market</a> and Spirit Beauty Lounge. In the meantime, I'm playing around with DIY. </span></span><br />

people are going green, the most frequent question they ask is which shower gel they should use. Shower gel is
actually a great place to start your transition because most varieties work
with all skin types, unlike face products. But finding a water based formula
like a shower gel without harsh preservatives and detergents is more difficult.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>

but I shy away from them because they are a different pH than your skin. This
can make you feel dry and tight. So I usually direct people to one of the only
gentle detergent based shower gels with safe preservatives and a reasonable
price tag: <a href="http://www.deepsteep.com/cgi-bin/shop2/sc_searchz.cgi?user_id&database=db_shopping.exm&template=shop_prod_sr2.html&0_option=1&0=08">Deep Steep</a>.</span></span></span>

reasonable $9.95 for 8oz, so feel free to suds up all over. It's readily
available online at their website and <a href="http://www.vitacost.com/deep-steep-body-wash-brown-sugar-vanilla-8-fl-oz?csrc=GPF-PA-Beauty%20%26%20Personal%20Care-674749061822&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw=&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=674749061822&gclid=Cj0KEQiAqYCkBRC4xNiSu5-Y-PcBEiQA96OM9EQAjfRLsyfF-lwD3hO3VxDpPgHJ-ZSS_LrwmpAHgmAaAiSL8P8HAQ">Vitacost</a>, and various Whole Foods and
TJMaxx stores nationwide. It uses the gentlest detergent, coco glucoside, to
keep you clean and food grade potassium sorbate as a preservative. It's in a
soothing aloe base with shots of shea and cocoa butters. But my favorite part?
The tangerine melon and spearmint honeydew scents. And the brown sugar vanilla
might be perfect for the coming holiday season.</span></span></span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Oils are so intriguing. Even if they resemble the same golden toned, slippery droplets, they have such different effects on my skin.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Barbary fig seed oil didn't seem that different from the rest. Until it left the bottle and absorbed onto my face. But I should have known. Barbary fig seed oil has more vitamin E than argan oil. It is exceptionally rich in linoleic acid, which is extremely hydrating for skin. It also contains a high concentration of betalains, an antioxidant. Its small molecular structure means that it readily absorbs into thirsty skin, without leaving any shine. La Bella Figura claims it aids hyperpigmentation, aging and hormonal skin types.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">When I applied the oil, the scent is what I noticed first. It smells like olives and peat moss. While it's not tuberose, neroli or jasmine, it's unadultured. And it's potent. It glides onto skin like velvet. The moisturizing effects have longevity, more so than other facial oils I've tried. I've noticed that for proper hydration, fewer drops and reapplications are necessary.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><a href="http://labellafigurabeauty.com/">La Bella Figura</a>, the beautiful company that creates this vial of gold, has developed a host of serums, concentrates and masks. All are clean, purposeful formulas. And they just launched a brand <a href="http://labellafigurabeauty.com/collections/makeup">new line of makeup</a>! I'm so excited to see them grow. This bottle was my first foray into their line and it definitely won't be the last.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It's not much of a hunt anymore. I've found some pretty potent formulas. At this point I get to luxuriate in all my deodorant choices. And this one is different because it's DIY.</span><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Because I'm the chef, I get to customize this deodorant. That means I don't add any scent, which I love because I smell like absolutely nothing. Pour it into a small glass jar and let it sit to solidify. I usually use an old jam jar. I like to mix it a bit right before total solidification because otherwise the cornstarch and baking soda can sink a bit and the top is just coconut oil (which won't do the trick alone). If you notice when you're using it that it's not gritty, you haven't mixed it well enough! Just chunk it up with a spoon.</i></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">There may be some substitutions that you'll want to incorporate. Some people get rashes on their underarms from baking soda. I don't, so I leave it in. If you find it happening, swap baking soda for arrowroot powder. It'll fix it up right quick. If you want a scent, throw in some essential oils (tea tree, lavender and eucalyptus are power houses). I personally like smelling like nothing. It kinda makes me feel like my deodorant is SUPERduper. Also, I'm lazy. </span></div>

The coconut oil is antifungal and antibacterial. This is one of the best deodorants I've ever used (tied with this <a href="http://frecklestotoes.blogspot.com/2013/09/the-great-deodorant-hunt-part-3.html">bad boy</a>). This simple DIY deodorant passes the most rigorous test: a full day in an air conditioned building. Of course, it also lasts through high intensity interval training and kayak trips. </span></span><br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XxbLB-KQX7Q/U2Bm2sTlEQI/AAAAAAAAArs/PTpjD189o9E/s1600/sunumbra2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XxbLB-KQX7Q/U2Bm2sTlEQI/AAAAAAAAArs/PTpjD189o9E/s1600/sunumbra2.JPG" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Zinc is a particularly drying ingredient. So if you have dry or dehydrated skin, it can exacerbate the condition to use a mineral sunscreen. But for those of you with drier skin, have I got the sunscreen for you.</span><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Sunumbra first caught my eye because their <a href="http://www.sunumbra.com/sunumbra-sport.html">sport sunscreen</a> contains red raspberry seed oil and their<a href="http://www.sunumbra.com/sunumbra-sunkids.html"> kids sunscreen</a> contains astaxanthin. You guys know how much I adore <a href="http://frecklestotoes.blogspot.com/2013/12/internal-sunscreen.html">astaxanthin</a>. <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">It has been shown to prevent UV-induced lipid peroxidation, sunburn, phototoxicity, photoallergy and protect collagen after UV radiation exposure [1]. </span>So whenever I spot it in a product, I need to try it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Sunumbra Sunkids uses Cape Camomile oil, which is anti-inflammatory and soothing for irritating skin. It contains aloe ferox extract, which is healing for chapped skin, polyphenol rich green rooibos and broccoli sprout extract adds additional UV protection. No wonder it has a whopping SPF 40.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Sunumbra is slightly tinted. It means that if I'm lazy and forget to fully rub it in, you can't see white streaks.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uECuxN1a1Mw/U2Bmadw3EII/AAAAAAAAArk/-AP29jNF4NY/s1600/sunumbra.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uECuxN1a1Mw/U2Bmadw3EII/AAAAAAAAArk/-AP29jNF4NY/s1600/sunumbra.JPG" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">One negative about the formula is that it separates easily. I find myself regularly shaking the bottle to combine the thick and the liquid consistencies.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">What stood out most about this sunscreen was it's moisturizing properties. I didn't even have to use a facial oil or cream under it. That's unheard of. It's perfect for polar vortex dry skin.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Propylene glycol is in a lot of personal care products that
masquerade as green (I’m looking at you, Tom’s of Maine deodorant).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It's in
body washes and lotions and shampoos and much more. And did you know that
propylene glycol is the active ingredient in anti-freeze [1]? It’s used industrially
to de-ice planes.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Propylene glycol is also a penetration enhancer. It’s
present in products to carry them deeper into the dermis. But in that process,
it is absorbed into the bloodstream. The FDA calls propylene glycol “generally
recognized as safe” because at low levels it isn’t toxic. However, propylene
glycol poisoning has occurring during intravenous administration and consumption
of large quantities by children [2]. During incorrect intravenous
administration the following symptoms have been detected: <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 115%;">hypotension, arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, serum
hyperosmolality, lactic acidosis, and haemolysis</span> [3].</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Propylene glycol is hard on the marine ecosystem. It is

our water supply (i.e. when your lotion washes down your shower drain) can reduce
the amount of safe aquatic habitats for fish and macroinvertebrates [1].</span><o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">A hydrosol isn't just water. It's much more potent than that.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">A hydrosol is the aromatic component of a plant extracted through steam distillation. Hydrosols contain all the beneficial qualities of essential oils, but are more mild and gentle.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I love using hydrosols, especially in the winter. They help body butters apply smoothly, and add slip to facial oils on dry days. The spritz is refreshing, calming, and an aromatherapy treat.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I've dabbled with several different hydrosols. Evan Healy's <a href="http://www.evanhealy.com/products/show/67#">Immortelle hydrosol</a> (<i>pictured</i>) is good for sensitive and blemish prone skin. It's made from helichrysum, a yellow wildflower that grows in the south of France and Italy. There are many anecdotal accounts of helichrysum's benefits for calming and regenerating inflamed tissue and healing eczema [1].</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I've also fallen for Marie Veronique's hydrating <a href="http://www.mvorganics.com/products/mvo-mist">Mist</a>, whose scent I've gotten dozens of compliments on. It includes a host of beneficial ingredients like anti-inflammatory licorice. She has also included rose, which has emollient properties for moisturizing dry skin [2]. It also contains turmeric, which is fantastic for acneic and mature skin.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">And of course I've also tried Tata Harper's <a href="http://www.tataharperskincare.com/hydrating-floral-essence-50ml">Hydrating Floral Essence</a>. I'm tempted to sample Josh Rosebrook's <a href="http://joshrosebrook.com/collections/test1/products/hydrating-accelerator">Hydrating Accelerator</a> next. Anyone tried it?</span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">I have a soft spot for sunscreen. That and pretty shoes.</span></span><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I've definitely
discussed sunscreen <a href="http://frecklestotoes.blogspot.com/2012/09/summer-is-almost-over-but-keep-wearing.html">plenty</a>, and doled out <a href="http://frecklestotoes.blogspot.com/2012/07/ultimate-sunscreen-guide-2012.html">recommendation </a>after
<a href="http://frecklestotoes.blogspot.com/2011/06/ultimate-sunscreen-guide.html">recommendation</a>. And I'm sure you already know consuming certain foods
high in antioxidants and free radical scavengers can aid in sun
protection. But have you heard of the pill you can take?</span></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
Astaxanthin is a component of red algae which contains higher levels of
anthocyanins, antioxidants, carotenoids and leutenoids than any other
tested substance. </span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">It is produced by the microalgae <i>Haematococcus pluvialis</i> when its water supply evaporates, to protect itself from ultraviolet radiation. Astaxanthin displays impressive credentials. It is 65 times more powerful at scavenging free radicals than Vitamin C. </span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">It's also 550 times more effective than vitamin E at singlet oxygen quenching, a particular type of oxidation.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Astaxanthin has been shown to protect skin when applied topically. Astaxanthin applied to hairless mice exposed to radiation for 18 weeks showed undamaged collagen as compared to the control group [1]. </span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Researchers noted that astaxanthin could prevent UV-induced lipid peroxidation, sunburn, phototoxicity and photoallergy. As a result,
many skin care lines have picked it up. MVO uses it in their <a href="http://www.mvorganics.com/collections/pacific-advanced-treatment">Pacific Line</a> and <a href="http://www.mvorganics.com/collections/protect">sunscreens</a>. <a href="http://www.suntegrityskincare.com/">Suntegrity</a> and <a href="http://www.sunumbra.com/sunumbra-sunkids.html">Sunumbra </a>also feature it. But
there is some research that indicates it may also be able to protect
skin when taken internally.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></span> <span style="color: blue;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">In one study, hairless mice were fed different combinations of
astaxanthin, beta-carotene and retinol for four months. After
irradiation, astaxanthin alone or in combination with retinol was
effective at preventing photoaging of the skin [2].</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: blue;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="color: black;">In 1998, astaxanthin was found to be 100 times more powerful than
beta-carotene and 1000 times more powerful than lutein in preventing UVA
light-induced oxidative stress [3].</span></span></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The Journal of Dermatological Science published research demonstrating that astaxanthin is able to prevent human DNA alternation induced by UVA light exposure [4].</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"></span><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">In another investigation, the skin's resistance to UVA and UVB was measured before and after astaxanthin supplementation. After three weeks of taking 4mg each day, subjects showed a dramatic increase in the length of time necessary for UV radiation to redden their skin [5].</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
I'm curious to see where this research
goes. </span></span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RYJOsrUUW8o/UpT6Va1al0I/AAAAAAAAAms/RUHhPZsufgw/s1600/hay.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RYJOsrUUW8o/UpT6Va1al0I/AAAAAAAAAms/RUHhPZsufgw/s640/hay.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There are a new federal labeling laws that took effect Saturday, Nov. 23 2013.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; padding: 0px;">
Meatpackarers are now required to include country-of-origin labels on packaged meat. This includes where livestock was born, raised and slaughtered. Existing laws require meatpackers to list countries, but not what activities took place where. The development of this legislation began in 2002, when mad cow disease from imported meat was a concern in the United States.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; padding: 0px;">
Big names in the industry, namely Cargill Inc. and Tyson Food Inc., oppose the law. They claim that it is wasteful and costly. <span style="background-color: white;">The USDA estimates that compliance to the new rules will cost the meat industry between $53.1 million and $192.1 million.</span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">These costs include the elimination of commingling, the combining of different herds located in different countries. With this new legislation, it is now required that livestock be separated according to origin. The only exception is ground beef, where commingling is still permitted.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Supporters of the bill believe that it will improve food safety, and strengthen transparency, which is especially critical during outbreaks of food-borne illness.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I'm sure not all of you are meat eaters. But nevertheless, what are your thoughts on the law?</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 13px;">It was love at first sight. As soon as I saw it on my lips I knew it was the one.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 13px;">Sometimes you can search endlessly for a color that works for you (like me and The Red Lip). Other times, the perfect one falls into your lap. That's how it was when I tried a lippy while waiting to meet a friend for brunch. The lipstick was from <a href="http://www.drhauschka.com/events-and-news/playoflight.aspx">Dr. Hauschka's new line Play of Light</a>. The line focuses on a more translucent color with a luminescent finish. And I fell hard for <a href="https://store.drhauschka.com/naturalskincare/Novum_Lipstick_9_Miraculous_Rose__0_07_oz/i_1_0_/_NV9.aspx">Novum 12, Exhilarating Berry</a>. The color looked like it was made for my face. I bought it on the spot.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EbQiPPLR6yo/Uou8l2I3uHI/AAAAAAAAAmA/X6Exq2QM5ew/s1600/DSC_0005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EbQiPPLR6yo/Uou8l2I3uHI/AAAAAAAAAmA/X6Exq2QM5ew/s640/DSC_0005.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 13px;">The color is a perfect my-lips-but-so-much-better. A gentle berry mauve that is flattering for most skin tones. It just lit up my whole face when I put it on. I'm not sure I've ever had that experience with a lip color before. The translucent color allows you to build the product to choose your intensity. But even maxed out, I still wear it during the daytime. The finish has a slight gloss to it, so matte girls steer clear.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 13px;">The ingredients list is as clean as a whistle. Just the way I like it for products on my lips that I might ingest over the course of a day. Don't fret over the "fragrance" listed. I contacted the company and it is made from a blend of purely essential oils. And the smell is divine. I reapply during the day just to get another hit. I'm not sure what their secret is, but it is reminiscent of ylang ylang.</span></span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Winter is coming. And I have just the oil for you.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="color: #222222;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I have a soft spot for red raspberry seed oil. So when I spotted it in <a href="http://www.blissoma.com/Restore--Deep-Healing-Oil-Serum_p_54.html">Blissoma's Restore Serum</a> I had to give it a try.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I have never sampled any of Blissoma's products before. <a href="http://www.blissoma.com/">Blissoma </a>is one of the rare companies whose entire line only contains clean ingredients. They manufacture their own herb extracts and juice fresh produce harvested from their own fields. Everything is made by the founder, Julie Longyear and production manager Frank Wilderspin. The fantastic company has been on my radar for awhile and I'd always hoped I would have a chance to sample their line. The opportunity arose when my other raspberry seed oil from MVO ran out.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This may be called a serum, but is in fact an oil blend. It is bursting with ten organic oils. The very first ingredient in this blend, which I always think is a tell all, is organic evening primrose oil. Evening Primrose oil is rich in omega 5, 6, and 9 essential fatty acids including GLA. Omega 5 is a rare fatty acid that acts as a potent antioxidant, an anti-inflammatory, and a highly absorbent nutrient for skin cells. Blissoma also includes hemp seed oil so rich in chlorofyll that it's green. In addition to red raspberry seed oil, Tamanu oil, also known for its UV protective properties, makes an appearance. Tamanu oil is incredibly potent against acne, bug bites and skin irritations. Neroli and immortelle, renowned for their healing properties, are the cherries on top.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The directions for this oil tell those with normal skin to use it weekly, so of course I started with it daily. My skin did not complain for a second. It loved it. In comparison to other oils I've tried, this one is much richer. In fact, it may be the most effective moisturizer I've tried. This is not surprising, as the base, evening primrose oil, is an incredibly nourishing and moisturizing oil. As a result, it is a perfect choice for winter skin.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Have you tried any of Blissoma's wonderful skincare? Their entire line is clean through and through, so you don't have to scrutinize the ingredients. They stand out because I so infrequently find this in a company. Tell me if you have a favorite product of theirs!</span><br />

On me, Kesu is definitively spicier than Fleur Sauvage. I could detect some sandalwood, cedar and hints of clove initially. However, the scent became softer and more mellow the longer I wore it. </span><span class="il" style="background-color: #ffffcc;">Tsi</span><span style="background-color: white;">-</span><span class="il" style="background-color: #ffffcc;">La</span><span style="background-color: white;"> perfumes simply add luxury to your routine.</span></span><br />

<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">I've realized that this is a wish list as much as it is a product launch reveal. I'll be honest, I'm hoping to see these on my doorstep soon.</span></span><br />

RMS Beauty is constantly upping the ante, previously with their <a href="http://www.rmsbeauty.com/shop/product10.html">"Un" Powder</a>, followed by their <a href="http://www.rmsbeauty.com/shop/product12.html">Buriti Bronzer</a>. Now they are powering ahead in response to Paris fashion week. Berry stained pouts covered the streets and runways alike. Those deep hued lips are everywhere this fall. Think the of the richness of pomegranate seeds and cranberry. They call it <a href="http://www.rmsbeauty.com/shop/product3.html#prettyPhoto">Diabolique Lip2Cheek</a>.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Do I need to wax poetic about the coconut and argan oils it contains? No. It's already clear RMS knows how to pamper skin. Miranda Kerr debuted the color at the Met Gala and demonstrated its glamour.</span></span></div>

<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Have you heard of the new mascara on the block? Juice beauty just released a <a href="http://www.juicebeauty.com/store/lash-defining-mascara-583.html">new mascara</a> that green beauty bloggers say champions lengthening. There are rumors of no smudging or flaking that have me curious. I am itching to test its limits! </span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Only complaints here are some ethylhexylglycerin as a preservative that I'd like to see replaced with radish root ferment. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><b>Juice Beauty Stem Cellular CC Cream</b></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Juice beauty also banged out a <a href="http://www.juicebeauty.com/store/stem-cellular-cc-cream.html">CC cream</a>. What's a CC cream, you say? The new generation of BB creams, that's what. It aims to provide color correction, SPF, and treatments for skin troubles like acne and hyperpigmentation.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">While others have been doing this long before the CC moniker (thanks <a href="http://www.mvorganics.com/products/mvo-everyday-coverage-spf-30">MVO</a>) I can still appreciate the effort. I've already admitted undying love to tinted sunscreens (protection with zero white cast and a radiant glow? What's not to love?) so I'm game to see what others have up their sleeves. </span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It's pretty clean, but if I had my way the ethylhexylglycerin would leave the party.</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">I've actually tried this newbie. And from one application I can say my skin definitely didn't complain! But before I say more, I'll have to take it out for another spin.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><b>May Lindstrom The Honey Mud</b></span></span></div>

<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Do you suffer from breakouts? If so, some yummy goo from May Lindstrom may be worth trying. The Honey Mud is a cleanser made of honey, clay and warming spices. I especially admire the inclusion of frankincense and myrrh, two powerful, but rare, agents against acne. The Honey Mud is so new, it's not even available yet! But you can go ahead and <a href="http://maylindstrom.com/the_honey_mud.php">pre-order</a>.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Have you tried any of these new teases?! <span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">RMS Living Luminizer may have the biggest fan base out there, but the first time I tried it, I couldn't see the difference.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It fell to the bottom of my makeup bag and lay forgotten. Months later, after I read at least a dozen more glowing reviews, I decided to unearth it. After a hurried experimental application, I jetted to the city for dinner. In the twinkling lights of the restaurant I caught a glimpse of my reflection, and my mind was changed forever.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">You see, this luminizer isn't filled with glitter, shimmer or shine. That's just too easy for RMS. It's subtle. In certain lighting, you won't notice a difference in your skin (i.e. my harsh </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">fluorescent</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">overhead bathroom lights). But in other environments, it makes your skin look lit from within.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It has infinite uses. Try it as a highlighter for your brow bone. Use it to accent your cupids bow. After applying lipstick, dab it onto the center of your lips for added dimension. Attain cheekbones like Angelina Jolie with a few swipes. Some unconventional uses include the collarbone (for those strapless evening dresses), alone as an eye shadow, and as a lip gloss.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The little pot contains coconut oil and mica to accomplish that luminous effect. The application is creamy, with a satin-pearl finish. But remember when applying that a little goes a very long way. And bonus, because it contains no colors or dyes, it can be used on all skin tones.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Have you tried this cult classic? Where do you apply it?</span><br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_TsdaZphxnI/UkR7GbWCoxI/AAAAAAAAAhw/-E-LOqjICWI/s1600/soap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_TsdaZphxnI/UkR7GbWCoxI/AAAAAAAAAhw/-E-LOqjICWI/s1600/soap.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">My deodorant stopped working.</span><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I started working in an air conditioned building and all of a sudden all bets were off. The weekend was fine. Evening yoga classes were fine. But that work week was ruined. My trusty <a href="http://frecklestotoes.blogspot.com/2011/10/great-deodorant-hunt-part-1.html">Lemongrass Pit Putty</a> and <a href="http://frecklestotoes.blogspot.com/2012/04/great-deodorant-hunt-part-2.html">Burt's Bee's Herbal Spray</a> needed to be upgraded.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So I decided to give the cult classic <a href="http://soapwallakitchen.com/products/deodorant-cream">Soapwalla</a> a go. I know, I know, I said I didn't want a cream that I had to apply with my fingers. It was a last ditch resort. But you know what? It's not bad at all. In fact, the cream isn't goopey or sticky and you barely notice a residue, so it's easy to rinse off simply with water.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I've been using Soapwalla for about nine months. It had a rigorous trial. I didn't want to just know that it passed the air conditioning test, or the summer hike ordeal. I needed to know that it stood the test of time. Our bodies can adjust somehow. It's like using a different shampoo and having an amazing hair day. Well, despite the fact that I don't possess a patient bone in my body, I can now report that it indeed stands the test of time. Over the course of nine months it has <i>not once</i> let me down. That means air conditioning, summer hikes, heated yoga, dancing the night away, days at the lake, the tropics. Do you get the picture yet?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Soapwalla uses lavender, sweet orange and peppermint essential oils because combined, this trifecta is antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial and antiseptic. In addition, corn starch, baking soda and kaolin clay are included to absorb moisture. A few oils are included for a soothing quality. That's it. This formula is all about performance. And it doesn't sacrifice it's clean credits for any of the uglies, including propylene glycol, parabens or aluminum.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">One word of caution: some friends of mine, as well as reviewers online, have discovered that the baking soda in Soapwalla is irritating and can cause a rash after repeat usage. But it never happened to me and my pits remained nothing but happy.</span><br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--pixN052NkE/UkNdd2FgIPI/AAAAAAAAAhY/nTbwn-XJcXU/s1600/off2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--pixN052NkE/UkNdd2FgIPI/AAAAAAAAAhY/nTbwn-XJcXU/s400/off2.png" width="163" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">In my posts about treating bug bites with <a href="http://frecklestotoes.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-new-calamine-lotion-salve-for-bug.html">charcoal </a>and <a href="http://frecklestotoes.blogspot.com/2013/07/when-charcoal-doesnt-work.html">tamanu oil</a>, I bemoaned my lack of forethought to use insect repellent.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">One reader brought up the dangers of the active ingredient, DEET, present in most bug repellents. It was a very good point to address, and I realized this ingredient merits a post of it's own. </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">When I use bug repellent, I make sure to use formulations that forgo DEET because it has been associated with serious health and environmental concerns.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The EPA has reported cases of seizures and deaths resulting from DEET-toxicity [1]. Exposure to DEET can also lead to <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;">insomnia, mood disturbances and impaired cognitive function, as reported by </span></span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The Pesticide Information Project of Cooperative Extension Offices [2]. </span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;">DEET has been found to inhibit the activity of an enzyme in the central nervous system</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;">in both insects and mammals known as acetylcholinesterase [3</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;">].</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;"> This enzyme</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;"> plays a role in the function of the neurons which control muscles.</span></span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"> Because of this quality</span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;">, DEET is combined with insecticides, which leads to an excessive accumulation of acetylcholine at the synaptic cleft, resulting in neuromuscular paralysis and death by asphyxiation [4].</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;"> </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;">While DEET has not been proven to be bioaccumulate, it has a negative effect on the environment. DEET has been shown to be toxic to freswater fish and plankton [5][6][7].</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;">DEET can cross the placenta and has been linked to birth defects such as </span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.953125px;">statomotor retardation, muscular hypotonia, central hearing loss, </span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.953125px;">coarctation of the aorta, </span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.953125px;">strabismus and death [8]</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 15.953125px;">, [9].</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;">DEET is a solvent. It can dissolve plastic and synthetic fabrics [10]. It is also a known skin irritant [11]. I definitely don't want that on my skin.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;"><br /></span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;">DEET is good at one thing; it definitely keeps the mosquitoes and bugs away. However, there are some safer alternatives to DEET. Herbs that have been shown to deter insects include citronella, lemongrass, catnip, eucalyptus and peppermint. Once I go through tests of various ingredients and formulations, I'll make sure to report back on my results.</span></span><br />
