My Vices

I'm not perfect. And not when it comes to clean beauty either.

I adore sharing new products I'm smitten with, DIY recipes, and powerhouse ingredients that amp up the volume on your green lifestyle. But we all have weaknesses, and I'm no exception. I use an exfoliator that only has one ingredient I recognize: water. I could whip up my own sugar scrub with ingredients in my kitchen in about 1 minute, so why do I keep using my Strawberry Lemonade & Paraben Body Scrub? I can't stand waste. It's why I've befriended the to-go box and composting.

Okay. I'll throw it out when I get home.

Ever painted on the seductive smokey eye and needed more sizzle? Same. Fake eyelashes were one of my favorite choices for a punch of pizazz. I've ranted about it before, mascara was more trouble than it was worth. Fake lashes were easier. But you know that little tube you use to glue them to your lids? Not a pretty cocktail of chemicals, that one.

And then there's lipstick. It takes some time to find the right shade for your pout. And sometimes, once you leave the glare of fluorescent lights, your purchase doesn't look like you thought it did. You have to go back and start all over again. I have a few tubes that I'm not ready to toss; too much time was spent getting it just right. Once I polish them off I'll opt for the squeaky clean Ilia, Vapour, RMS or Hemp Organics lipsticks.

Your turn. I want to hear about what you can't bear to part with. What product just has no replacement? And what brand do you have some unexplainable, inane attachment to?

  1. Is there some kind of natural "gum" type substance you could use to glue on your fake eyelashes? Like guar gum or something? There has to be a natural substitute!

P.s. I can't give up Coca-cola. I try to avoid the kind that doesn't use pure cane sugar, but its hard to find. I'm trying though! I drink far less now than I did only just 6 months ago :)

    1. Caroline,

I have problems with my sweet tooth, too! Today I ate two thirds of a giant chocolate Easter bunny. My coworkers think I'm insane...

    1. @Claudia, deodorant is one of the toughest. Maybe try easing into it by moving from antiperspirant to deodorant first? Then try moving to natural.

  4. I finally finished a Nars duo that I bought almost two years ago for almost $35. I've known it was full of trash but I simply could not throw away something that was so expensive. I've been using Vapour and Jane Iredele, who both use better ingredients and are also way less expensive.

    1. Woohoo! You got through it! Good work. Now I need to do that with my lipsticks. (And guess what? I really DID throw away that scrub when I got home!)
