Jasons Toothpastes

I discovered Jason Natural Cosmetics toothpastes recently and gave them a test run. The first toothpaste I tried was Jason Vanilla Mint Powersmile. This is probably the most mouthwatering flavor I've ever tasted in a toothpaste (and that's including all the amazing options I had at the dentist when I was a kid, like strawberry banana and chocolate!) This flavor is the perfect combination of sweet vanilla and refreshing mint.

When I switched over from my Crest tube, I was worried about results. But boy was I proven wrong. You know that feeling after eating spinach, or at the end of the day when you feel like it's time for a scrub? Well Jason has some tricks up their sleeve, because your teeth feel squeaky clean all day. Don't get me wrong, I brushed my teeth anyway (probably 4 times a day during the first few days of my trial. Yeah, it's that amazing). But that shouldn't be surprising because Powersmile has 3 different abrasives: calcium carbonate, silica and sodium bicarbonate. Abrasives polish the teeth and remove plaque to prevent cavities and periodontal disease. And boy did they polish!

The second Jason toothpaste I tried was Oral Comfort Gel in Very Berry Mint. This toothpaste contains CoQ10 to soothe sensitive teeth and gums. While I can't comment on its impact on sensitive teeth because I've got tough little pearly whites, I did experience the same cleaner-than-clean feeling. Oral Comfort polishes with four powerhouses: bamboo powder, calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and silica. My measly Crest toothpaste only mustered one! This toothpaste, however has a more subtle flavor than the strong mint of Crest. It was a little like sweet milk with a berry undertone.

But what I like a lot about these toothpastes is what they don't have. They don't have fluoride, which is actually toxic in high doses, which you can read about here. While the amount you use on your toothbrush doesn't reach toxic levels, it can lead to fluorosis in children under 7, see this Wikipedia article. In addition, fluoride is a byproduct of industrial waste from the phosphate fertilizer industry. Fluorosilicic acid (FSA) is the most commonly used to fluorinate water and toothpaste. FSA is a corrosive acid and has been linked to higher blood lead levels in children by Dartmouth College. A recent study from the University of North Carolina found that FSA can leach lead from water pipes. To read further, here are some interesting facts about fluoride.

Both toothpastes also don't have sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). SLS has been linked to ulcers and skin irritation. It is still being debated as to whether or not it's a carcinogen. Either way, I can do without both of these things in my mouth!

Instead, these toothpastes are both full of fruit extracts, mint oils and aloe! And apparently Catherine Zeta Jones claims she gets her brilliant white smile from brushing with strawberries, which is one of the ingredients in Oral Comfort. So looks like you get some star power from these tubes too.
